How to Stop Keyboard Noise on Calls
A loud keyboard is one of the most common call complaints, and one of the easiest to fix. Here is how to type during a call without broadcasting every keystroke.
Why keyboards are so audible
Mechanical switches are sharp, percussive sounds that sit right in the frequency range microphones love. A mic near your desk picks them up clearly, especially if you type fast while someone else is talking.
The quick fixes
- Move the mic away from the keyboard. A headset mic near your mouth hears you, not your desk.
- Use a desk mat. A soft mat under the keyboard absorbs some of the impact noise.
- Mute when you are not talking. Obvious, but the most reliable fix during someone else's turn.
The real fix: noise cancellation
Muting is not always practical, especially if you are taking notes while listening. Real-time noise-cancellation software is built for exactly this: it recognizes keyboard clatter as noise and removes it while keeping your voice, so you can type and talk at the same time. Our guide to removing background noise covers how that works.
The short version
Move the mic, add a soft surface, and let noise-cancellation software handle the rest. With those in place you can type through a call and nobody will hear it.
